Larry's 1987 Sand Rail
This
sand rail I built in 1987 out of a basic
kit but had extensive additional tubing
added. It had a bus tranny powered by
a 1915cc motor with a single 44 Weber
carb. I added the street legal lights
and also designed the aluminum and stainless
steel sheet metal panels(remember, my
dad owns a sheet metal shop) I went
top of the line with everything(hydraulic
pedals, steering brake, hydraulic E
brake, triple rear gas shocks) up until
it was almost finished. I already had
quite a bill racked up and the quick
release 5 point harnesses were a chunk
of change so I went to the junkyard
and spent 5 bucks on a couple black
seat belts. Needless to say, after an
hour or so of going around in a circle
grabbing handfulls of steering brake,
I had built up quite a pile of dirt
around the track and eventually I hit
it and rolled the rail onto it's top.
There I am, hanging upside down with
gas dripping out of the tank and I can't
unbuckle my lap belt because for one
thing, it's full of DIRT, plus, I could
either take my weight of the belt using
my legs and both arms OR attempt to
unbuckle the belt, but I couldn't do
BOTH. Luckily, my friend was watching
on his 3 wheeler and came over and helped
me out. That was on a Saturday afternoon.
Monday morning my new 5 point harnesses
were headed for the UPS truck to be
delivered our shop! Don't skimp on the
essentials!!! I could have been TOAST!
Anyone seen this?
